Religious Trauma Syndrome

As an evangelical Christian pastor's kid, I grew up in a world that did not recognize or acknowledge my intelligence, my ideas, perspective, or bodily autonomy as a woman. Watching 55% of Christian Conservative America try to put women back into a shame-based value system around sex and healthcare access is something I will always actively fight against. The social dystopia we are experiencing right now can be very disorienting, triggering, and leave people feeling helpless to the systems that traumatize us.

Hermeneutical injustice occurs when one cannot understand and articulate a (harmful) experience due to a structural identity prejudice that excludes us from properly participating in basic knowledge practices. I spent the entirety of my 20's unpacking the damaging effects of extreme, politicized, fundamental Christianity. Not only has there been a learning curve from information gaps, but there are many shared experiences to process for those coming out of this paradigm.

Together, we can process guilt, shame, avoidance, anxieties, and fear that have manifested in our bodies from dogmatic oppression. The goal in this work is to be unconditionally accepting of ourselves in how far we have come, embrace where we are at, and continue striving to where we want to be. You can find your spiritual path, and it doesn't have to reside in misogyny, dogma, and patriarchy.
